When teenager Gaige started at Toogoolawa School, he thought he would never be able to read. Like many children at the special assistance school for boys, Gaige’s struggle with reading limited his potential in and out of the classroom.
With support from Schools Plus, the school launched Get Lit; a simple literacy program that focused on sounds and used one-to-one lessons to boost reading skills.
Because of the generosity of our donors and the dedication of Toogoolawa’s teachers, many children, like Gaige, were able to experience success in the classroom for the very first time.
As the boys grasped new words and sounds from the page, their self-confidence grew, their behaviour improved and they began to believe in their ability to learn. In the last 12 months of the program, students achieved over 3 years of reading progress.
Gaige’s inspiring story of impact is one of many featured in our newly released Impact Report. Because of your incredibly generous support, Schools Plus has been able to raise over $36 million for students facing disadvantage.
Thank you again for supporting our vision to close the education gap and help ensure all children have access to a great education.
