The transition between school and work can be challenging for many students, but Sarah Corry, Principal at Henbury School in Tiwi, Darwin has revolutionised this space, creating extensive work experiences, as well as supporting innovative vocational education programs to ensure more opportunities for her students.
Sarah’s achievements include extending Henbury’s commercial work training sites to include a coffee trailer and café and acquiring new premises to host the Henbury Precinct Café and its Op Shop- initiatives that are part of the school’s ‘Transition 2 Work’ program. In 2023, all students participated in work training across various roles at the Henbury Precinct Café and its Op Shop and completed 103 vocational courses. Additionally, 22 students earned their Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training with individualised pathways.
Sarah fosters a culture where students with additional needs achieve autonomy. To facilitate this, she collaborates with various stakeholders including Territory Families, Centrelink, and NDIS providers, to ensure all families are supported. Her efforts extend to national and international collaborations, involving staff in projects with the National Children’s Commissioner, Anne Hollonds and NDIS Minister, Bill Shorten.
Sarah’s community engagement is crucial to Henbury’s success. She has secured significant funding, including a $60,000 grant from the Darwin Airport Development Group and an annual $30,000 donation for shop rent. The Henbury Corporate Christmas Luncheon, reintroduced in 2023, raised funds and awareness, securing sponsorships and promoting student achievements.
Sarah’s innovative programs have increased post-school pathways for students and her leadership has led to significant educational achievements earning Henbury national and Territory awards, including an Excellence Award for 2022 Special Education School of the Year.
