Early Career Teacher
Nurturing students’ desire for higher education is a wonderful goal for a teacher, and one that George Allen, a science teacher at Cobram Secondary College, has pursued with vigor.
As Head of Science, George has developed the school’s high abilities program for his regional students, as well as coordinated their participation in Victoria’s High Abilities Program for Years 7 and 8. Together with organising university exposure camps, these initiatives have increased his students aspirations to attend university, leading to a projected rise in VCE science subject enrolment and over $77,500 in scholarships for his students, many of whom are first-generation university attendees.
Though only starting out in his own career, George has played a crucial role in mentoring new staff to his school, developing a flipped classroom model for teaching practice and an extension maths program. His leadership has improved student engagement and academic rigor, especially in Year 9 and 10 science electives. He is also pursuing a graduate certificate in STEM education to further his expertise.
Beyond school, George is actively engaged with his local community, encouraging student involvement and creating a local womens and girls AFL team. George’s commitment to education and community is evident in his efforts to secure substantial scholarships for students and reduce staff turnover. Ultimately, his efforts have helped to build the school’s reputation, and also to foster a supportive, collaborative and aspirational school environment.
