Dev Ansh Tiwari, an Assistant Principal at Katherine High School in the Northern Territory, has made a positive impact in improving learning outcomes at his remote school, where 65% of students are from First Nations backgrounds.
Dev holds Katherine High’s “Expert Workforce” portfolio, where he leads staff engagement with research for practical application in the classroom. Dev researched and connected with internal and external stakeholders to develop a literacy intervention program specific to Katherine High’s context and is now leading its roll out.
Previously at Huonville High School in Tasmania, Dev and his colleagues introduced a research-based framework that improved English grades by 60% and writing self-efficacy by 80%. The framework prioritised student agency using developmental rubrics and was scaled across the school.
Dev builds student engagement by connecting with the local community. In his Legal Studies class, he connected students with colleagues in the legal industry, organised excursions to the local courthouse and ran workshops with the school-based constable to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications. These experiences have sparked many students’ interests in legal careers.
Driven by a vision for equitable education, Dev aims to become a principal in a disadvantaged community. Building on his participation in international education expert Lucy Crehan’s Global Education Policy Accelerator course, he plans to pursue doctoral studies overseas to explore leadership frameworks and funding models for underprivileged schools, so he can continue to advocate for disadvantaged students and help pave the way for a brighter future for them.
