The student population at Sarah Redfern High School in Minto, Western Sydney is very diverse and often faces a range of socioeconomic challenges. Cameron Rodgers, the Head Teacher of Innovation at the school, has helped to spearhead a number of STEAM initiatives in ground-breaking ways to provide increased opportunities for his students.
Cameron has incorporated game-based and problem-solving activities into his teaching, which has led to improved student attendance and engagement and achieved a 70% rise in top band HSC biology results. He also established a selective STEAM program for Stage 4 students, fostering differentiated learning and challenging high-potential students.
To help ensure other teachers see the same uplift in engagement, Cameron leads professional learning sessions and collaborates with feeder primary schools to enhance STEAM and ICT education. His contributions earned him a keynote speaker slot at the 2023 STEM education conference, highlighting his impact on educational practice and professional development within his community.
Cameron actively engages with parents through a portal for the STEAM enrichment program and partners with organisations like Featherdale Wildlife Park for projects such as the Campbelltown Koala Advocacy Initiative, connecting students with real-world experiences.
As a young man from a low-socioeconomic context, Cameron has first-hand experience of disadvantage and has a strong passion and commitment to support students from similar backgrounds. Cameron is pursuing a PhD to increase his knowledge and impact in education.
