Partnering With Google for the Future

Logan, Queensland

Schools Plus and Google have joined forces to ensure young Australians are prepared for the future skills that they will need for 21st Century careers. In a partnership spanning three and a half years, disadvantaged schools from across the nation will be supported with innovative projects that empower children with tech, digital and critical thinking abilities needed to thrive in the modern workplace.

One standout example is a cluster of 11 schools in Logan, Queensland, on a mission to shape the future of over 15,000 children in a three-year initiative led by Beenleigh State High School. In partnership with Griffith University, TAFE, Logan Office of Economic Development, Department of Education, Department of Youth Justice and local employers, the schools aim to upskill and micro-credential over 200 educators to teach 21st century skills and create meaningful pathways so their young people are future ready.  In an area where unemployment rates are constantly high, this initiative is crucial.

Aisha, a Year 10 student, has been inspired by the opportunities she’s discovered through the initiative, like the Schools Plus and Google STEM event at Beenleigh State High School in August this year. After hearing about the exciting work of a crime scene investigator, drone aviation specialists and the array of opportunities at Google, Aisha’s curiosity in a STEM career has been sparked.

And this is only the beginning for Aisha and many other children from these schools. They’ll have more chances to learn from industry experts, explore new places and get involved in their community. Plus, they’ll work on real-world projects to learn how to work together, solve problems, and think creatively – all essential skills for success in an everchanging world.
