Bradley Headlam is the Assistant Principal at North Geelong Secondary College whose Be Bold Be Heard (BBBH) program has closed a persistent gender gap in student voice and turned adolescent girls into leaders of school-wide change.  

Launched to address disengagement revealed in Attitudes to School Survey data, the program equips students to analyse their own school data and drive systemic change from within.  

At North Geelong, average English scores have risen, senior completion sits at 100%, and every BBBH participant now reports “very good” or “excellent” confidence in public speaking and challenging school leadership.  

The voice-perception gender gap has closed entirely with female inclusion perceptions, ahead of both regional and state averages. 

Bradley built the program’s foundations through a Community of Practice across three schools, developing an evaluation tool and a quarterly forum model anchored by events at GMHBA Stadium.  

He has since promoted BBBH through the State Government Principals Conference, VASSP and Soroptimist International, growing it into more than 20 government and non-government schools reaching over 700 students, supported by trained Staff Champions and a formal coordination structure. In October he leads a BBBH State forum, the next steps in progressing the program statewide. 

Recognised by VASSP, Gender Equity Victoria and the National Council of Women Victoria, Bradley’s work has translated into tangible outcomes for students: an alumni mentoring network, scholarship pathways, and mentorship connections with MPs and Ministers that have opened doors to volunteering, fundraising and employment.
