Samuel Charlton advocated, designed and built McAuley Community School’s first systematic enrichment program, identifying a gap in provision for high-potential learners whose results placed them well above benchmarks, but who weren’t being meaningfully extended in class.
Samuel incorporated AGAT results alongside numeracy, literacy and ICT data to build a more robust, multi-measure picture of student potential, ensuring high-potential learners weren’t identified on academic performance alone. Samuel developed the school’s first framework for identifying these students and giving them qualitatively different learning, not just more of the same. The program has grown from 30 to 70 students in three years, with a further 150 taking part in lunchtime and after-school clubs, and participating students show strong academic growth beyond expected trajectories that is visibly transferring into their confidence and classroom performance.
Samuel has worked deliberately to embed his expertise school-wide, collaborating with classroom teachers on using enrichment data to shift how colleagues design differentiation across the curriculum.
He has rigorously tracked and identified the program’s impact on student outcomes, using this evidence to refine the framework year on year, and other schools have since approached him to understand how he measures and demonstrates growth in high-potential learners.
Sam has continually extended the program in a range of ways, including forging a partnership with Makers Empire that embeds design-thinking and CAD-based prototyping, supported by 3D printers, and establishing a dedicated resource hub so enrichment materials, equipment and project resources are centrally accessible, allowing the program to scale sustainably as student numbers grow.
Students are further extended through competitions including the Da Vinci Decathlon and Future Problem Solvers, connecting them with high-potential peers across the state. By continually assessing feedback from teachers, staff and parents, Samuel has ensured the program keeps evolving to meet student needs, doubling its capacity and securing its continued growth with increasing demand.
