Earlier this year, Schools Plus opened applications for our Smart Giving program to eligible schools across Australia. Through Smart Giving, selected schools receive funding, coaching and resources to support initiatives that improve students’ outcomes. The applications reveal these insights about what schools need in 2020.
This is nearly double the level of demand recorded in previous years.
18% of applications are from bushfire impacted schools
25% of applications are from drought-affected schools
30% of applications are for projects related to COVID-19 recovery
The top four challenges schools need help to address
The number of students with anxiety, trauma backgrounds and social/emotional needs is rising rapidly. Initiatives will support the wellbeing of students, teachers and families.
Strong literacy skills underpin a person’s ability to thrive at school and beyond. Intensive programs will ensure students of all ages improve their reading, writing and oral language skills.
Developing teachers’ skills so they are more effective in the classroom is the number one thing schools can do to improve student outcomes.
Introducing STEM and project-based learning, where students solve real-life problems and take part in hands-on activities, is a highly engaging way to build future-focused skills.
