Positive Education

Crookwell High School, NSW

Crookwell High School in rural NSW has had increasing numbers of students presenting with serious mental health problems, as well as decreased attendance due to the anxiety some students experience by going to school. The community struggles to access mental health services due to the distance needed to travel to see counsellors or psychologists, and the limited numbers of these professionals available in the nearest town.

Crookwell High has taken steps to improve the mental wellbeing of its students over the past three years. However, it needs support to deliver a tailor-made whole school plan with a focus on Positive Education, an approach that emphasises student wellbeing as much as achievement. The school plans to engage a consultant with expertise in Positive Education to help develop a 3-5 year plan, as well as train key staff in the Positive Education model and other mental health/resilience programs. These key staff will then train all teachers and school staff, as well as staff in Crookwell’s feeder primary schools. Year 10 students will also be trained as ‘peer support leaders’ so they can deliver a resilience program to Year 7 students in 2019. Your donation will help support the costs of staff professional development and planning activities (including course costs and teacher release), plus resources and technology to support the resilience program.

The expected outcomes include increased attendance and mental wellbeing of students, improved behaviour and learning capacity, and an increased connection to the school. The Positive Education program is also expected to benefit the whole community, through connections to the feeder primary schools and the school’s significant role in the town.
