Learning playground accessible for all

Calamvale Special School, QLD

We’d love a play area that is safe, accessible and suitable for all our students.

Our playground today

Calamvale Special School needs a new playground because the current equipment can’t be used by over one third of our 145 students as they experience significant mobility issues, are confined to wheelchairs or have a vision impairment.

Further, as our student cohort changes and the student population grows, the current facilities constructed are simply not suitable.  Many have also been decommissioned due to decay and safety reasons.

Our dream by 2020

We’d love a play area with equipment  that is safe and accessible for all our students.  This would not only give students a place to relax outside, but would allow them to improve their gross motor skills, develop their strength, flexibility, fitness, balance and co-ordination.

Our vision for the new playground design will  encourage students to interact with each other and staff (for example, when they ask for a turn, initiate or join in a game, share equipment) and be a key resource for learning and supporting the development of their social and communication skills.    Building these skills will greatly benefit our students and allow them to become greater participants in the community, both now and in the future.

P&C Association have a plan but need your help

We’ve sourced a suitable playground, however it is much more expensive than a playground designed for able-bodied children (our cheapest quote is $94,556).  With limited school budgets, our motivated P&C Association have agreed to make fundraising for this new playground the Number 1 priority for the next 12 months.  Recognising the need to secure close to $100,000, the P&C will look to receive funding from a variety of sources including grants, business donations and community fundraising activities.   This project is the start of the community fundraising activities.
