Learning devices for Aboriginal students and students from refugee backgrounds

Aranmore Catholic College, WA

Within our college community of 720 students, we have 67 Aboriginal students and 36 refugee students, most of whom have very little financial support. Generally, these students are unable to pay school fees and require additional assistance from the college to continue their education.

We need your support to enable all our students to have individual access to a laptop, which is seen as pivotal to engaging students in today’s educational setting and preparing them for life beyond school. On a typical day, students use a laptop for access to the internet and educational software, to research, to communicate with their teachers, to store e-textbooks, to complete assessments and to present their work. Without personal, daily access to this crucial tool, which many of their peers have, these students struggle to keep up, feel isolated and become disengaged and fall behind.

We wish to purchase enough laptops to be able to lend them to all students who genuinely need them. The College is currently lending a small number of laptops, but our resources are insufficient to meet the daily demand. Student success is dependent upon being able to connect to IT. Your support can make a real difference to these students; many who have faced extreme hardships and challenges to attend school.
