Intensive Literacy Engagement

Lightning Ridge Central School, NSW

Lightning Ridge Central School is a Kindergarten-Year 12 school in an opal mining community in western NSW. Improving literacy skills is a top priority, as its Year 3, 5 and 7 Aboriginal students perform well below their non-Aboriginal peers and the state average in NAPLAN literacy tests.

The school seeks to introduce the Lexia Core5 reading program, an intensive online program that diagnoses students’ skills and then personalises the instruction to fill in their ability gaps. The program will be used with 22 Aboriginal students in Years 2-7 who need targeted support. Alongside this program, these students will work with the Assistant Principal, Primary Aboriginal Education Officer and two Aboriginal community members in intensive, small group literacy activities for two hours each week.

Through this project, students are expected to develop their literacy skills and improve their confidence, potentially leading to fewer behavioural issues. The initiative will also involve the training of two Aboriginal community members as teachers’ aides, improving community engagement and community perceptions about the school.

Donations will support the introduction of this intensive literacy program over its first 18 months, by enabling the school to purchase the Lexia Core5 program and additional computers for use by the students, plus engage two Aboriginal community members over six terms.
