Inspiring STEM Ability and Creativity (ISAAC)

Southern River College, WA

This cluster project involving one secondary college and five primary schools seeks funding to increase student engagement and achievement through the development of 21st-century skill sets, and to increase students’ post-school education and employment opportunities.

In 2017, the school piloted targeted programs at SRC, including after school STEM extension programs involving primary students.  Participating students were observed to be more involved in their schooling, with improved skills to underpin success in their later years of schooling.

The aim of this initiative is to build a STEM community for seamless learning experiences, professional learning and sharing resources and technologies.

The school seeks funding to enable students to participate in a range of activities including: the FIRST Robotics Competition, Coder Dojo, the Interschool STEM Challenge (which involves Year 6 students working with mentors from Years 8 & 9), a STEM Fair and the Primary STEM extension program (ISAAC Club) – which provides an opportunity for inquiry and discovery for all Years 5 & 6 students from feeder primary schools.

Through the STEM Teacher Network, the school also seeks to build the capacity of primary and secondary teachers’ STEM skills, through a range of professional learning workshops and conferences.

(Southern River College - lead school in cluster incorporating: Wirrabirra PS, Ashburton PS, Huntingdale PS, Seaforth PS, Gosnells PS and Southern Grove PS)
