Inclusive Playground and Sporting Equipment

Willans Hill School, NSW

Willans Hill School provides individually planned and structured learning and development to children and young people with mild to severe physical, intellectual and sensory disabilities from Kindergarten through to Year 12.

Teachers aim to ensure safe, inclusive and challenging learning environments in the classroom, during extra curricula and sporting activities and in structured physical activity and unstructured play in our own school play areas.

While so much of the school’s educational plan relates to classroom learning, the school strives to meet the needs of students outside the classroom through encouraging and facilitating physical activity such as sport and structured and unstructured play. Suitable equipment, which the school currently lacks, would do much to enhance this area of learning and development for the students. Equipment needs to be specially designed to cater for the various disabilities and to ensure health and safety of the students and staff. While playground equipment is always a costly item, for our student cohort it is significantly more expensive than for other schools because of the special requirements.

Children and young people with intellectual, physical and/or sensory disabilities require significant support to provide them with the same opportunities as their peers. The equipment needs to be designed to cater for the broad range of abilities and to ensure the safety of children and carers while providing for physical and social development. Such equipment must be designed to minimise risk of harm to our children and the equipment needs to include soft fall surfaces. Because of this, such equipment is usually significantly more expensive than playground and sporting equipment for other children.

In the Primary playground, the aim is to install a playground area with wheelchair access that also includes sensory items such as interactive panels, slides, maraca beads and rope squeeze panels.

Willans Hill School’s mission is to create a learning environment in the Wagga Wagga community that enables children from Kindergarten through to Year 12, who have a range of physical, intellectual and sensory disabilities ranging from mild to severe, to Learn, Connect and Contribute.

Willans Hill School believes that every student has the ability to learn, achieve and succeed. Unfortunately for children with disabilities, the additional dollar cost to provide the appropriate tools and equipment to ensure this learning, achievement and success puts them at a disadvantage when compared to other children.

This project would make a significant contribution toward the major development and upgrade of the school’s playgrounds and outside learning environments, enabling the school to proceed and in full providing a resource to benefit children with special needs who currently attend the school and to benefit the children who will attend in the future.
