High Expectations – Challenging the School Community to Achieve at it’s Best

Gulgong High School, NSW

Gulgong High School, in the Central Tablelands region, wants to create a culture of high expectations and build its reputation as a school that caters well to students at all academic levels.

The school, which has successfully invested in delivering support and programs for low-achieving students over a long time, is challenged by a local perception that high schools in Mudgee (27km away) provide “more academic” options. With Year 7 student numbers growing over the past two years, it is taking the opportunity to improve its teaching practice and develop a more collaborative culture to improve student outcomes.

The school will join the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, which is designed to boost the academic results of students regardless of their background or disadvantage. The program provides a skills framework for all students to be successful, independent learners while also providing explicit tools for teachers to engage in higher order thinking. AVID is an award-winning program recognised internationally for its effectiveness.

You support will help 10 Gulgong High teachers (one third of the staff) become trained in AVID this year, with a further eight trained in 2019. A Year 7 class will become the first AVID class, to be explicitly taught a framework of higher order thinking, literacy and numeracy skills, supported by quality feedback. With one third of the staff trained in AVID strategies, the benefit will also extend to all of their students across Years 7 to 12. The school expects the AVID program to change the culture of low expectation in the school community, and enable students to achieve at a high level.
