Healthy Sports at Woniora Road School

Woniora Road School, NSW

Woniora Road School is a NSW Department of Education School for Specific Purpose (SSP) for students with internalising mental health issues.  It has 42 secondary students enrolled, all of whom have been referred to the school from mainstream schools in the Ultimo education directorate.  The school's vision is to deliver a positive, supportive, enriching and engaging learning experience for all students.  It achieves this by offering a mainstream curriculum leading to HSC completion with extensive individualised supports and a range of therapeutic and vocational programs. The school is recognised as a centre of excellence and has received awards acknowledging its innovation in incorporating technology into its wellbeing practices.

Research has identified a strong link between exercise and improved mental health. To raise awareness of this link and support its students the school has developed a specific sport and healthy lifestyle program.  This has incorporated;

-Participation in the Premier’s Sporting Challenge to promote participation in sports and track the activity levels of staff and students.

-The creation of a school gymnasium with access to exercise equipment.

-The engagement of external personal trainers to deliver both group sessions and personalised fitness plans

-The engagement of a Yoga instructor to deliver tailored mindfulness and movement sessions.

-The creation of an interschool sports network with similar specialised settings.

The school is seeking to grow and expand its sport and healthy lifestyle program through an upgrade to its main sporting facility – the school basketball court - and the acquisition of sporting equipment. The court acts as the primary sporting resource and the central hub for all playground activities. Years of wear and tear on the court, as well as the growth in participation numbers necessitates the expansion of a new court surface. The school is looking to compliment the new court with a new backboard, hoop and stanchion.
