Enhancing Cognitive Skills

Blackwater State High School, QLD

In the mining town of Blackwater in Central Queensland, major changes in the mining industry have led Blackwater State High School to analyse how and what it is teaching students. With an increasing emphasis on skilled workers and a reduction in apprenticeships locally, the school has identified cognitive skill development as its highest priority to equip its students for the challenges of school and life.

Over the past two years, the school has taken a targeted approach to improve the writing quality of its students and to bring its curriculum. This has reaped rewards, with Year 9 NAPLAN results in spelling and grammar and punctuation now above the national average.

But Blackwater State High knows it needs to do more to prepare its students. It has identified the need to explicitly teach the complex cognitive skills used in writing, such as how to analyse, justify and explain. Your support will help the school build its teachers' skills, through the engagement of an expert literacy consultant to deliver whole-staff workshops on teaching cognitive skills in the classroom. Building on the school's recent progress, this project is expected to significantly improve senior students’ chances of transitioning to their chosen pathway of work or further study.
