Engaging students for a brighter future

Australian Schools Plus, NSW

Research shows more than 40% of Australian students are disengaged and falling behind in their learning. This end of financial year we’re asking for your support to tackle the huge issue of student engagement.

"Engaged students feel that what they are learning has meaning, they’re regularly getting a sense of accomplishment from taking on a challenge and succeeding." - Pete Goss, The Grattan Institute.

In an analysis of nearly 350 funding submissions, projects that aim to lift student engagement account for one third of all school initiatives seeking support from donors through Schools Plus. With your help, we can work with schools to re-engage students by targeting issues such as attendance, the transition to primary/high school and then into work, or additional support for students in literacy or numeracy.

At Moomba Park Primary in Melbourne, it was the youngest students who needed a head start to their education. Through a Steps to Prep pre-school program last year, students starting school in 2017 developed the social, language and motor skills that meant they stepped into the classroom with confidence.

“The first year of schooling is so important. It’s helped enormously … we have noticed such a huge growth in our children already because they were so prepared,” says Prep teacher Abby Croft.
