Discovery Learning for Engagement

Elizabeth East Primary School, SA

Elizabeth East Primary School seeks to build its teachers’ capacity to introduce the effective Discovery Learning approach, to engage their students. Discovery Learning uses many effective teaching approaches including explicit teaching, guided discovery, collaboration, issues-based learning, problem-based learning and has a strong emphasis on feedback for students. A Professional Learning Committee will visit Victorian schools to observe the Discovery Learning approach in action, and then plan the implementation at Elizabeth East Primary School.

All staff will be trained in Discovery Learning, and teachers across each year level will meet weekly for feedback, planning and assessment as they introduce the approach into the classroom. A Student Learning Committee will also be formed to observe and provide feedback and data on the Discovery Learning programs. As a result of this project, the school anticipates to see increased student motivation and engagement in learning and an increased capacity and confidence of teachers to use a repertoire of evidence-based skills, as part of the Discovery Learning Program.
