Challenging disadvantage through digital skills

Childers State School, QLD

With digital literacy increasingly becoming a prerequisite for almost all jobs, children who lack access to technology will have fewer opportunities in their post-school life. Childers State School, near Bundaberg, is determined to provide its students with the same chance at success as everyone else. The school is located in a low socio-economic area, where median income is significantly lower than the national average. Youth unemployment is high, a fifth of all households don’t have access to the Internet and many students arrive at Childers needing additional social and emotional support.

Through this project, Childers State School wants to challenge these statistics and ensure its students have the digital literacy education that is vital to their future success. Its project will embed digital technology into every aspect of teaching and learning across the school, including the school’s special education class. All teachers and teacher aides will receive professional development and time released from the classroom to collaborate, plan and mentor each other to produce a higher-quality learning approach. Donations will also fund the purchase of iPads, laptops, robotics kits and other gadgets that will advance students’ skills and enable whole-class learning, rather than the small groups that can be accommodated now.

Your support for this project will give students the chance to break out of a cycle of disadvantage and fulfil their potential – the school describes it as ‘future-proofing’ their young people.
