Cafe for Students Run by Students

Banora Point High School, NSW

At Banora Point High School we serve a diverse community with a representation of lower socio-economic families and want to provide students, from all backgrounds the chance to learn hands on practical skills they can use once they leave school.

To do this, we would like to create a welcoming inclusive meeting space for students and staff by operating an environmentally friendly coffee shop with Alfresco seating in order to serve people and positively contribute to the school community using fresh ingredients from local suppliers when possible.

The café will not only serve tea, coffee and snacks - we envisage the Aurora Jahla student team will provide food using locally sourced ingredients such as wattle seed biscuits, sauces and cakes.

Student members would predominantly come from The Hospitality class, Retail class, the Aboriginal education team.  Students will operate all aspects within the café, including being the Barista, cooking, cleaning and running marketing and business management activities. Some of these positions will also cross train as part of hospitality certificates and all will give the students the practical life skills they need for the future.

We need your support to help this café come to life by purchasing a vertical herb garden, raised vegetable garden beds and a window bar. We would also like to include a worm farm and composting area.  We will have an emphasis on sourcing local products and promoting fresh and healthy choices in line with the Department’s Healthy School Canteen Strategy.

Please get behind the Cafe to provide a place for students to take breaks, study, socialise and meet, which will be a peaceful and purposeful space.
