Breathe life back into our Sensory Water Garden

Nepean Special School, VIC

We are a government specialist school  offering comprehensive individual learning programs for over  120  students aged  5 - 18 years with a physical disability and/or complex health impairment.   Set on 10 acres in lovely native bush surrounds in Seaford, Victoria, we strive to have all our facilities accessible and  integrated positively into students learning needs.

Sensory Water Gardens can provide a unique environment that has the capacity to nurture and support wellbeing through providing opportunities for sensory regulation and encouraging relaxation, mindful and meditative states.   With this in mind, a beautiful Sensory Water Garden was constructed in the heart of our school during the early 1970s.  In its original state, this magnificent purpose built Sensory Water Garden had the capacity to support and inspire students with physical disabilities and complex health impairments to achieve the very best education, therapy and wellbeing outcomes.

Forty years later,  this incredibly important and unique feature of our school has become run down,  broken and unusable. The ponds with disintegrated liners sit empty, gutters have rusted, paint has flaked and chipped, many of the garden areas of this previously magical space have run to weeds, and the beautiful large and colourful fish that were integral to the serenity of this space have disappeared.

We would love and greatly appreciate your financial help to re-imagine and restore this area to its original beauty and purpose so that our students are once again able to enjoy the benefits it brings.  This restoration process will also include installation of discreet safety fencing and doors installed to protect the lives of our students without  blocking the restful and restorative sights and sounds the area can offer.

Your generosity in assisting us with this project will bring joy to over 120  students, their families and the staff that work within our school. The specialised space is inclusive and we are willing to open and share it with people of all abilities.
